Call to Worship

CH4 110
Glory be to God the Father,
Glory be to God the Son,
Glory be to God the Spirit,
Great Jehovah three in One.
Singing glory, glory.
Glory while eternal ages run.

Glory be to Him who loved us,
Washed us from each spot and stain.
Glory be to Him who bought us,
Made us kings with Him to reign.
Singing glory, glory.
Glory to the Lamb who once was slain.

Glory to the King of Angels,
Glory to the Church’s King.
Glory to the King of nations,
Heaven and earth your praises bring.
Singing glory, glory.
Glory to the King of Nations bring

Glory blessing praise eternal,
Thus the choir of angels sings.
Honour riches power dominion,
Thus its praise creation brings.
Singing glory, glory.
Glory, glory to the King of Kin

Prayer of Approach & Confession

Ch4 356
Meekness and majesty, manhood and deity,
In perfect harmony, the man who is God.
Lord of eternity, dwells in humanity,
Kneels in humility, and washes our feet.
Refrain-O what a mystery,-meekness and majesty.
Bow down and worship, for this is your God,
This is your God!
Father’s pure radiance, perfect in innocence,
Yet learns obedience to death on a cross.
Suffering to give us life, conquering through sacrifice,
And, as they crucify, prays: ‘Father forgive.’ – Refrain
Wisdom unsearchable, God the invisible,
Love indestructible in frailty appears.
Lord of infinity, stooping so tenderly,
Lifts our humanity to the heights of His throne. – Refrain

SCRIPTURE READING
Luke Ch2: 41-52 Joan Harvey
Hebrews Ch5: 1-10 Revd David Doyle

CH4 354
O love, how deep, how broad, how high,
surpassing thought and fantasy,
that God, the Son of God, should take
our mortal form for mortals’ sake!

For us baptized, for us he bore
his holy fast and hungered sore,
for us temptation sharp he knew;
for us the tempter overthrew.

For us he prayed; for us he taught;
for us the lost with love he sought;
by words and signs and actions, he
brought health and hope to set us free..

For us to wicked men betrayed,
scourged, mocked, in crown of thorns arrayed,
he bore the shameful cross and death,
for us gave up his dying breath.

For us he rose from death again;
for us he went on high to reign;
for us he sent his Spirit here,
to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.

To him whose boundless love has won
Salvation for us through his son:
To God the Father, glory be
Both now and through eternity

SERMON
“Learning Obedience”

CH4 402
“Take up your cross,” the Saviour said,
“If thou would My disciple be;
Deny thyself, the world forsake,
And humbly follow after Me.”

Take up your cross, let not its weight
Fill thy weak spirit with alarm;
His strength shall bear your spirit up,
And brace your heart and nerve your arm.

Take up your cross, nor heed the shame,
Nor let thy foolish pride rebel;
Thy Lord refused not even to die,
Upon a cross on Calvary’s hill.

Take up your cross then in His strength,
And calmly every deluge brave,
It guide thee to a better home,
It points to glory o’er the grave.

Take up your cross and follow Christ,
Nor think till death to lay it down;
For only those who bear the cross
May hope to wear the glorious crown
Offering and Prayer of Dedication
Prayer for Others

CH4 468
Son of God, eternal Saviour,
Source of life and truth and grace,
Son of Man, whose birth incarnate
hallows all our human race,
Great High Priest, who, throned in glory,
for your own will ever plead,
fill us with thy love and pity,
heal our wrongs and help our need.

Lord, as you have lived for others
so may we for others live;
freely have thy gifts been granted,
freely may thy servants give.
Yours the gold and yours the silver,
Yours the wealth of sea and land,
we but stewards of thy bounty,
held in trust at your command.

Come, O Christ, and reign among us,
King of Love and Prince of Peace,
hush the storm of strife and passion,
bid its cruel discords cease;
Yoursthe prayer, and yours the purpose;
that your people should be one,
grant from heaven our hope’s fruition:
here on earth your will be done..

Call to Worship

MP 192
God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
crown your ancient Church’s story,
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the facing of this hour,

Lo! the hosts of evil round us
scorn your Christ, assail his ways!
Fears and doubts too long have bound us–
free our hearts to work and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days.

Heal your children’s warring madness,
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of your salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
serving you whom we adore.

Prayer of Approach

MP 611
Spirit of holiness, wisdom and faithfulness,
wind of the Lord, blowing strongly and free:
strength of our serving and joy of our worshipping
Spirit of God, bring your fulness to me!

You came to interpret and teach us effectively
all that the Saviour has spoken and done;
to glorify Jesus is all your activity
promise and gift of the Father and Son:
Spirit of holiness…

You came with your gifts to supply all our poverty,
pouring your love on the church in her need;
you came with your fruit for our growth to maturity,
richly refreshing the souls that you feed:
Spirit of holiness…

You came to the world in its pride and futility,
warning of dangers, directing us home;
now with us and in us, we welcome your company;
Spirit of Christ, in his name you have come:
Spirit of holiness…

READINGS
Psalm 1 Eric Budgell
Luke 6: 17-28 Revd John Stevenson

MP 608
Speak, Lord, in the stillness,
speak your word to me;
help me now to listen
in expectancy.

Speak, O gracious Master,
in this quiet hour;
let me see your face, Lord,
feel your touch of power.

For the words you give me,
they are life indeed;
living Bread from heaven
now my spirit feed.

Speak, your servant listens
I await your word;
let me know your presence,
let your voice be heard!

Fill me with the knowledge
of your glorious will;
all your own good pleasure
in my life fulfil.

SERMON
Blessings and Curses

CH4 549
How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.

Offering and Prayer of dedication
Prayers for others

CH4 561
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain -This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Saviour all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Saviour all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. – Refrain
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Saviour am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. – Refrain

Call to Worship

CH4 104
The Lord Of Heaven Confess,
On High His Glory Raise.
Him Let All Angels Bless,
Him All His Armies Praise.
Him Glorify
Sun, Moon, And Stars;
Ye Higher Spheres,
And Cloudy Sky.
From God Your Beings Are,
Him Therefore Famous Make;
You All Created Were,
When He The Word But Spake.
And From That Place,
Where Fixed You Be
By His Decree,
You Cannot Pass.
Praise God From Earth Below,
Ye Dragons, And Ye Deeps:
Fire, Hail, Clouds, Wind, And Snow,
Whom In Command He Keeps.
Praise Ye His Name,
Hills Great And Small,
Trees Low And Tall;
Beasts Wild And Tame;
O Let God’s Name Be Praised
Above Both Earth And Sky;
For He His Saints Hath Raised
And Set Their Horn On High;
Even Those That Be
Of Israel’s Race,
Near To His Grace.
The Lord Praise Ye.
Prayer of Approach & Confession

Ch4 200
Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and corner-stone,
chosen of the Lord, and precious,
binding all the Church in one,
holy Zion’s help for ever,
and her confidence alone.

To this temple, where we call thee,
come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
with your constant loving-kindess
hear thy servants as they pray;
and thy fullest benediction
shed within its walls alway.

Here bestow on all your servants
what they ask of you to gain,
what they gain from you for ever
with the blessèd to retain,
and hereafter in thy glory
evermore with you to reign.

Laud and honour to the Father,
laud and honour to the Son,
laud and honour to the Spirit,
ever Three, and ever One,
One in might and One in glory
while unending ages run.

SCRIPTURE READING

PSALM 100
Anne McHolm Isaiah 6: 1-8
Acts 2: 43-47 Revd David Doyle

CH4 583
Spirit divine, attend our prayers,
and make this house your home;
descend with all your gracious powers;
come now, great Spirit, come!
Come as the fire: and purge our hearts
like sacrificial flame;
let our whole life an offering be
to our Redeemer’s name.
Come as the dove: and spread your wings,
the wings of peaceful love;
and let your Church on earth become
blest as the Church above.
Come as the wind, with rushing sound
and Pentecostal grace,
that all of woman born may see
the glory of your face.
Spirit divine, attend our prayers;
and make this world your home;
descend with all your gracious powers;
come now, great Spirit, come

SERMON
“Worship The Lord”

CH4 191
Ye that know the Lord is gracious,
ye for whom a cornerstone
stands, of God elect and precious,
laid that ye may build thereon,
see that on that sure foundation
ye a living temple raise,
towers that may tell forth salvation,
walls that may re-echo praise.

Living stones, by God appointed
each to his allotted place,
kings and priests, by God anointed,
shall ye not declare his grace?
Ye, a royal generation,
tell the tidings of your birth,
tidings of a new creation
to an old and weary earth.

Tell the praise of him who called you
out of darkness into light,
broke the fetters that enthralled you,
gave you freedom, peace and sight:
tell the tale of sins forgiven,
strength renewed and hope restored,
till the earth, in tune with heaven,
praise and magnify the Lord.

Offering and Prayer of Dedication
Prayer for Others

CH4 498
Angel voices ever singing
round your throne of light,
angel-harps for ever ringing,
rest not day nor night;
thousands only live to bless you
and confess you Lord of might.
Yea, we know your heart rejoices
in each work divine,
you did ears and hands and voices
for your praise design;
craftsman’s art and music’s measure
for your pleasure all combine.
In your house our gifts we offer
from your love so free;
and for your acceptance proffer
all unworthily
hearts and minds and hands and voices
in our choicest psalmody.
Honour, glory, might, and merit
yours shall ever be,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
blessed Trinity.
Earth and heaven join in praising,
voices raising joyfully.
