Dear friends,

Sketch of Dalserf ChurchMy summer holiday did not prove quite as restful as I had hoped for several reasons. Firstly, the search for a minister for Wishaw Old linked with Craigneuk and Belhaven where I am Interim Moderator was gathering momentum with the appointment of a sole nominee Robert Craig, Probationer Assistant at Fullarton Church, Irvine. During the last week of my "holiday" I had an important meeting of the Nominating Committee to attend. Also the Rorison project was at a critical stage requiring me to chair a meeting of the Renovation committee to make a final decision on the work which was to be carried out. Several other smaller meetings and telephone conversations and other work was required in connection with these. Another factor was the negotiations regarding the new manse kitchen which is being fitted at the time of writing - somewhat later than we had expected.

As I indicated to some members recently, our frustrations and setbacks are almost insignificant when we consider the plight of many in this world. Some are too preoccupied with just surviving to think about holidays, many not only have no kitchen but no house to live in. We need to learn to count our blessings rather than bemoan our difficulties, we will enjoy our blessings all the more if we do not take them for granted. God wants us to enjoy life but to do so in recognition that he is the source of everything we need which is given not out of necessity as though he owes us anything but entirely out of his grace and mercy.
An Action Plan was drawn up and approved by the Kirk Session following the church consultancy with Rev. Richard Higginbottom. A copy of this can be found on the notice board in Hamilton Hall. Partly in connection with this a leaflet "Opportunity Knocks" will accompany the newsletter in which a number of opportunities for Christian service within the congregation will be presented. I would commend this for your prayerful consideration.

Yours sincerely,
D. Cameron McPherson

The Machan Trust Logo

The Machan Trust has had a busy summer with plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy. The summer was started off with a few fundraisers events including Spring in the Park and our second successful Big Band Night. Both events were very successful and raised over £1000 for the Trust. A huge thank you goes to everyone that helped out on the days and to those that attended.

mt1.pngFollowing these events we then saw the arrival of our packed summer programme of activities. Firstly we were in Netherburn for a week with activities such as Laser Zone, giant games and arts and crafts. All the activities were great fun and the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed their time as you can see from the photos.

Our second week saw us in Chalmers Church for three days doing arts and crafts, a day at Laser Zone and games on the last day. Although there wasn’t a great turn out of young people the ones that came had a great time.

Following these weeks we saw a week of football coaching from some of the best at top clubs Celtic and Rangers. The week beginning Monday 4th August saw the start of a creative programme of arts and crafts and drama. The children made up their own dramas and designed a light, plus much more. The week was finished off with and exhibition and performance where parents could come and see what their children had achieved during the week.

The final week of our summer programme saw our space station programme launch off. The week was full of games, dramas, arts and much more. The week went really well and all the feedback from the children and parents was great.

Now that we are in August we shall be starting back our weekly activities shortly. So if you are P5 or above and our interested in badminton, football, arts, drama and more please get in touch with the Machan Trust on 01698 305674 to find out when the next class starts in your area.

Thank You

I would like to express my grateful thanks to Rev. D. C. McPherson for his visits and kind words of comfort during my stay in hospital and at home. Also I would like to thank Alex Ritchie, Lilias Eathorne, Isobel Kennedy, Agnes Murray and Anne Brown for their visits, and to say how much I have appreciated the cards and flowers received during my illness.
Alex Brown, Netherburn

Rorison Renovation Project

The Rorison Renovation Committee met on 5th August to decide how best to prioritise the remaining work at Rorison in the light of the available funds. This amounts to a total of £33,315 which includes a £10,000 grant from the Church of Scotland. The decision had to take into account the further constraint that the premises had to be ready to use for the new session of the organizations at the beginning of September.
The main items chosen are:- Insulation above the two halls; sliding partition: realignment and replacement of the glass with safety glass; installation of new lights and varnishing of the wooden ceiling in the large hall; vinyl flooring in both halls and in the back corridor. We expect to be able to install new double glazed windows in the small hall some time when it is not so necessary for the premises to be used, possibly at the end of the year. We hope very soon to be able to announce a date for the re-dedication.

Thank You

I wish to thank the minister and all my friends in the Church for the visits, flowers, cards and cakes received after my operation in May. My special thanks go to the members of the Choir and Guild for the beautiful bouquets.
Anne Brown
